Nightlife in San Francisco, CA

San Francisco bars, clubs and lounges are for the most part localized in different areas. For electronic music clubs, hip hop and chill art lounges, try San Francisco's SOMA. For bar-hopping with hipsters and rockers, Mission district rules. More elegant bars can be found in the Marina district. Gay bars and clubs exist all over San Francisco and not just in the Castro. San Francisco's North Beach is open until the wee hours with neon strip joints and cool hidden bars. Most of the clubs enforce a pretty strict dress code. Jeans are a no-go Guys fit right in wearing either leather/suede or suit pants and a button down shirt. Ladies can always opt for the little black dress. Most clubs charge a cover. Some do not accept credit cards at the bar.

The Cafe

This dance bar is in the second story and boasts a balcony and an open-to-the-sky patio inside. It's always packed with a perky, mixed crowd. The dance floor is, alas, barely two arm reaches across.

1015 Folsom

This is the best dance space in San Francisco, many think. It is a huge space with fabulous lighting system and many different spaces. In the center is the main dance floor, two stories tall with a skylight and galleries all around. There's an outdoor patio and an upstairs lounge with bar, both shielded from the speaker blare by doors. Down in the basement another dance floor, famous for acid house music, plenty of sofas.

3

The Redwood Room

The dramatic ceilings must be at least 25 feet tall and the Redwood walls give this bar a definite ambiance. It's one of the new chic "in" spots in town. This sophisticated bar also offers the feeling of being in a haunted mansion. Check out the "pictures" on the wall and you'll know what we mean.

Location/Contact Info

495 Geary St. San Francisco, CA 94102

4

Charlie's

For the heck of it, we're including a few of the past scene spots. There's Charlie's on Union Street, whose all-black dress attire and cool factor were the best in the city until it became fished out.
